Welcome to this very special Conference of the Medical Women’s Association of South Africa.

Even though I am not physically there with you, I can feel the excitement and energy pulsating in the room– the kind of energy that only South Africans possess. Please nurture and embrace this optimism, because it is our life line to the future.

The world as we know it continues to change. We live in an unpredictable, unstable and chaotic world. The political landscape changes rapidly, natural disasters and epidemics continue to kill thousands of people and our planet is under severe pressure. Our country is not insulated; we face our own domestic challenges which can create panic and distract us from what we need to do. And yet, all is not doom and gloom.

I am extremely proud to see MWASA thriving and pursuing the mission and vision we set for ourselves.

My belief is that we are making progress because we built our foundation on values and principles which are critical for success: solidarity, generosity, humility, respect for others and each other others and a burning desire to improve ourselves as medical women and to support and guide young women who are building their careers in the medical field. I am impressed by the speakers who come from diverse backgrounds to share their experiences and lessons with us. On behalf of MWASA, a big thank you for joining us.

A big THANK YOU and Congratulations to you all- a special thank you to our Secretary General, Dr Maponyane and the team. It has been a huge challenge to remain afloat, but perseverance and commitment always pay off. We have triumphed over many odds to be where we are, and our indomitable spirit will continue to propel us forward.

Do not bow down in the face of challenges, don’t be discouraged by sceptics. Rely on your inner strength and your belief in the possibility of creating a better and humane world. One which we can proudly bequeath to our grandchildren.

“Do not be daunted by the enormity of the world`s grief. Do justly, now, have mercy, now. Walk humbly, now. You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it”.

Enjoy the Conference.

All the best.
